  2. 5-Day SSB Interview: Conducted by military selectors to evaluate leadership qualities, psychology, physical obstacles, and personal capabilities.
  3. Medical Test & Merit: Detailed medical evaluations are conducted by a military board. Finally, the national merit list is prepared to induct selected candidates as cadets.

CDS Preparation Strategy & Common Mistakes

To clear the UPSC CDS exam in your first attempt, follow these professional guidelines:

1. Score High in English

English is the highest scoring paper in the CDS exam. Focus on mastering basic grammar rules, reading comprehension speed, and vocabulary synonyms to score 75+ marks.

2. Deep Read General Studies

UPSC GK questions are conceptual. Read NCERT science books (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) and follow current affairs daily to clear the sectional cutoff.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Ignoring the 20% sectional cutoff for any paper.
  • Neglecting static GK and current affairs, thinking you can clear the exam by studying only English.
  • Not practicing past year papers under standard time limits.

CDS Exam FAQs (20+ Questions Answered)

The Combined Defence Services (CDS) written exam is a national-level competitive exam conducted twice a year (CDS I in April and CDS II in September) by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). It is the gateway for graduates to join the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Officers Training Academy (OTA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), and Air Force Academy (AFA) as commissioned officers.

For the Indian Military Academy (IMA), candidates must be aged between 19 to 24 years on the course commencement date. Specifically, only unmarried male candidates are eligible to apply.

For the Officers Training Academy (OTA) entry, both unmarried male and female candidates must be aged between 19 to 25 years. OTA Chennai provides Short Service Commissions (SSC).

For the Air Force Academy (AFA), candidates must be aged between 20 to 24 years. The upper age limit is relaxed up to 26 years for candidates holding a valid commercial pilot license issued by DGCA India.

Candidates must hold a Graduation degree in any discipline (B.A., B.Sc., B.Com, B.E., B.Tech, etc.) from a recognized university or equivalent institution.

For the Indian Naval Academy (INA), a Degree in Engineering (B.E. or B.Tech) is mandatory. For the Air Force Academy (AFA), candidates must hold a Graduation degree in any discipline (with Physics & Mathematics at 10+2 level) OR a Bachelor of Engineering/Technology.

Yes, candidates who are in the final year or semester of their Graduation degree are fully eligible to apply for the CDS written exam, provided they do not have any backlogs and can produce proof of passing by the course commencement date.

For IMA, INA, and AFA entries, the written exam consists of three papers conducted on the same day: (1) English: 120 questions (100 marks, 2 hours), (2) General Knowledge: 120 questions (100 marks, 2 hours), and (3) Elementary Mathematics: 100 questions (100 marks, 2 hours). Total written score is 300 marks.

For the Officers Training Academy (OTA) entry, candidates sit for only two papers on the same day: (1) English: 120 questions (100 marks, 2 hours), and (2) General Knowledge: 120 questions (100 marks, 2 hours). There is no Mathematics paper for OTA. The total written score is 200 marks.

Yes, there is negative marking. For each incorrect answer, one-third (0.33) of the marks assigned to that question are deducted as a penalty.

The selection process consists of: (1) UPSC Written Exam, (2) 5-Day SSB Interview (conducted by Services Selection Boards of Army/Navy/Air Force), (3) Detailed Medical Examination, and (4) Merit List release based on combined scores.

Historically, the written cutoff ranges between: (1) IMA: 130 to 145 marks out of 300, (2) OTA: 95 to 105 marks out of 200, (3) AFA: 145 to 155 marks out of 300. Scoring at least 15-20 marks above the cutoff is recommended to secure final merit listing.

Selected cadets undergo training at their respective academies: (1) IMA Dehradun: 18 months, (2) OTA Chennai: 11 months, (3) INA Ezhimala: 18 months, and (4) AFA Dundigal: 74 weeks.

Permanent Commission (through IMA, INA, AFA) allows you to serve in the Armed Forces until retirement. Short Service Commission (through OTA Chennai) allows you to serve for an initial period of 10 years, extendable up to 14 years, after which officers can opt for permanent commission, retirement, or transition to civilian careers.

Commissioned officers start at the rank of Lieutenant (Army), Sub Lieutenant (Navy), or Flying Officer (Air Force) at Pay Level 10 of the 7th CPC. The basic salary starts at Rs. 56,100 per month, rising past Rs. 1,00,000 after adding MSP of Rs. 15,500, DA, and other service allowances.

For IMA/OTA entries, visual acuity must be at least 6/6 in the better eye and 6/9 in the worse eye, correctable to 6/6 with glasses. LASIK surgery is permitted under strict parameters if completed after 20 years of age.

DrDA Dehradun offers concept lectures for GS, intensive English vocabulary and grammar sessions, weekly OMR mock tests, in-campus GTO obstacle training, and SSB personal interview drills directed by retired board assessors.

The CDS exam is conducted twice every year, usually in April (CDS I) and September (CDS II). Notifications are released by UPSC in December and May.

UPSC requires candidates to score a minimum of 20% marks in each individual paper (English, GK, and Maths) to clear the exam, in addition to scoring above the aggregate written cutoff.
